The Game and Lil Wayne eagerly download an emulator to play the quite frankly stupidly overrated “Mayhem In Monsterland”

This isn’t a very good song.

What does it actually sample though? Those talented research hounds “rap bloggers” have been saying that it’s a Zombie Nation jack. I’d like that to be true because then they could get that guy from the “Kernkraft 400” video who looks like a German porn studio owner going to a fancy dress party as Katt Williams up on stage with them when they perform it live.

But wasn’t “Kernkraft 400” just the soundtrack to massively overrated Commodore 64 platformer Lazy Jones with the words “Zombie. Zombie. Zombie. Zombie Nation” shouted over the top? I mean, this was a big kerfuffle at the time, and even today it’s funny to see how all of your Boing Boingian “opinions4u about the internet” cats who are usually on some “FUCK THE RIAA MUSIC SHOULD BE FREE” ish get really really angry that some German trance DJs didn’t appropriately clear the sample from David Whitaker before briefly rocking the charts with it.

What makes this even more confusing is that the Lazy Jones soundtrack, as was the tradition at the time, contained MIDI versions of popular songs as a soundtrack. Except whereas most games would have seen your blocky representation of an elf warrior transverse a “no more than three moving characters on screen at any one time” universe to the digitised tune of “Carmina Burana” or “Greenslves”, the game’s composer David Whitaker decided to not bother with waiting for copyrights to clear and instead jacked popular hits of the time.

At 1:29 you can hear “99 Luftballoons” and at 4:30 there’s “Fade to Grey” by Visage. There’s other stuff in there as well but I wouldn’t have the slightest clue what it is without just reading the Wikipedia entry for it, which you can do in your own damn time.

You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a crowd of drunken Persians do circle dances to this nightmare.

Still waiting for the Block Beattaz to sample the intro muzak from Rock Star Ate My Hamster for Jackie Chain to rap over.

Could really go for a “Rap Star Ate My Hamster” right about now. I mean most of the comments on Nah Right are RSAMH-style shitty puns on musician names right? “Lil Wang will join your band for £50 a week: Y/N?”
