Chip Tha Ripper – U.A.F.
A lot of shit confuses me about Chip That Ripper. Why he’s chosen to call himself that for one reason. How a man can release four mixtapes with faux-Seth MacFarlane artwork and yet not shout out Lizzy Caplan-voiced American Dad dimepiece Debbie Hyman. And I don’t get how a man who is tight with Kid Cudi can consistently release good music.
“Here I Am” was ILB’s mixtape cut of 2010, two minutes of 4am “Chicken Soup for the Weed Paranoiac”. And dude’s latest mixtape, “Gift Raps”, works in pretty much the same way. “Unobtrusiveness” may sound like a weak rubric for rap but back when I was 16 the most listened to albums in my collection were the ones that’d just roll on quietly in the background during Civilization II marathons. And I have grown man shit I need to attend to these days which means I can’t interrupt every working day to start cripwalking so “Gift Wraps”’s none-more-chillness is kinda perfect for these days.
The whole tape’s produced by one of The Cool Kids, which three years ago would have been death but if there’s one thing that dubstep’s good for is that it’s finally taken the intended audience of hipster rap elsewhere so it doesn’t really feel like a threat any more. And that’s not just good news for rap fans as people it’s also good news for Subway as it means that assorted members of Plastic Little and Amanda Blank are now able to make five shifts a week.
