The disinterested ILB end of year rundown: #2 DJ Quik and Kurupt – Hey Playa (Moroccan Blues)

I suppose there is some humour to be had in what is, basically, a weed paean being laced by Kurupt, who quite clearly goes through crackpipes like most of us go through cans of original flavour Relentless.

So Quik and Kurupt came together to prove that if two legit legends in the game went into the lab, tried to bring their best material in a minute, worked at making an album that didn’t sound like anything else out there… then they’d promptly get ignored by every single rap blog in favour of documenting Joe Budden’s nineteenth nervous breakdown, and instead leave the album to be listened to solely by old white guys in Western Europe.

“9x Out Of 10” was always slightly overrated to us, being as it was basically “Grindin'” plus five years. “Hey Playa” was more like “Gangsta Lean” plus five years plus about 40% more greatness. And flipping a Food Network sample to build the whole track round? I mean, ideally a drum loop taken from the sound of Gennaro Contaldo breaking eggs in Saturday Kitchen’s omlette challenge, but you can’t have everything.

Obviously i’m gonna disagree with the shots fired at the majestic 9 Times Outta 10 (it had weird vocal samples and those We The West t-shirts in the video too damnit), but, yeah, this tune was fucking amazing.
