Hank Penny – Peroxide Blonde
It was either this or a photo of the Romanian national team from 1998.
Those of you with an appreciation for either Western Swing or celebrities fucking up should be familiar with Spade Cooley. For the uninitiated, Cooley was the founding father of the Western Swing movement who was later usurped in fame by Bob Wills, and responded to this by kicking his wife to death in front of his 13-year-old daughter and later dying of a heart attack in prison while playing a fiddle for the first time in seven years.
Hank Penny was a longtime associate of Cooley (even appearing on Cooley’s nascent TV shows in a comedy bumpkin role), and played a slightly more tempered style of Cooley’s bluegrass pop. To be honest I have nothing intelligent to say about this track other than a) I love it and b) it’s like a 40 years prior take on “Gel And Weave” by Project Pat. Pay tribute to the pioneers.
