Chloe Papas is a racist and a hypocrite

The great thing about the internet is that it gives us the chance to elevate people to the point of heroes before we’ve had a chance to look into who they are. It’s the classic local news story of the guy who’s given the freedom of the city for rescuing orphans from a fire, and then has it retracted the week after when someone realises he did 15 years in prison for child sex offences. And so it is with Chloe Papas.

You know her, right? People thought she was called Chris Havercroft for a bit. She’s a jobbing Australian hack who has spun social media gold by giving a Chris Brown album 0/5.Chris Brown, of course, is a wife-beater, and it’s important that we treat him exactly the same as John Lennon, Miles Davis, James Brown, Mark E Smith and all the other wifebeaters in musical history who had their careers ruined by the discovery of that fact.

So you put Papas Does Preach into a search engine. And you find her Pinterest page. And her favourite band of all time are Fleetwood Mac, as helmed by Lindsey Buckingham. Buckingham, as we all know, loved to smack his ex-girlfriend Carol Ann Harris about. Couldn’t get enough of beating women up, to the extent that he’s never refuted Harris’s allegations that he liked to pop Stevie Nicks one in the jaw on occasion as well. Now that’s weird. Because Chloe Papas, for some reason, loves wifebeating when it’s done by 1970s coke heads but not by peanut-headed R&B ingénues. Now, why could that be? What is an obvious difference between Chris Brown and Lindsey Buckingham. I mean, you look at them…. does anything come to mind?

Hey, for a laugh, let’s have a look at Chloe Papas’s favourite bands on Facebook. Long list, be patient:

  •     Basement Birds
  •     My Chemical Romance
  •     Mumford and Sons
  •     The Kooks
  •     Biffy Clyro
  •     Calvin Harris
  •     Blink-182
  •     Fleetwood Mac
  •     Velvet Underground
  •     Les Savy Fav
  •     The Strokes
  •     The Cure

  •     BOOM! BAP! POW!
  •     The Bamboos
  •     Fiona Apple
  •     Charlie Mayfair
  •     Katchafire
  •     Steve Parkin
  •     William Elliott Whitmore
  •     The Sleeping Souls
  •     Splinta
  •     Kimbra
  •     The Cairos
  •     Frozen Ocean
  •     DUNE RATS
  •     Deez Nuts
  •     The Menzingers
  •     Stu Larsen
  •     Jay Hoad
  •     The Raveonettes
  •     Local Resident Failure

  •     WILD FLAG

  •     Real Monsters (Band)

Between them, these acts have 193 members. And, at a guess, how many of those do you think are black? If you went with “0” you win the star prize! Which is a copy of “The Turner Diaries”, as signed by Chloe Papas.

Chloe Papas is a hypocrite and a racist, and the fact that people are marking her out as some sort of hero is fucking disgusting. I hope you’re all ashamed of yourselves for doing so.

Dommy P got the flow on the rodeo.

What’s just as annoying is that the girl can no more write than she can shit out Fabergé eggs at will. Gosh, she gave an album zero stars. I once gave Charlotte Church’s Tissues And Issues 0/10 in the NME and her own PR emailed me to say how hilarious they had all found it, you don’t hear me banging on about it.

Whoever wrote this blog is the dumbest fucking bitch ever (probably American) and no words known to man are blunt enough to summarise the level of stupidity of this twat…… maybe ‘Cunt?’ Chris Brown is a talentless turd (and no that’s not a racist remark – it’s the truth)…. fuckwit.

Have you considered that this girl may not be aware of Lennon and Buckingham’s shameful pasts? I’m not excusing her ignorance, far from it, and I fully accept that, yes, she is a hypocrite for writing this. As a ‘music journalist’ she should know this. Have you also considered that someone’s list of favourite bands of Facebook might not be exhaustive? Let’s not start start making bold allegations based on a list Facebook bands, eh?

Calling her racist because her favourite bands are all white is like saying someone’s a racist if they’ve never fucked a black guy. Or they don’t like chinese food. She’s totally a hypocrite but calling her a racist is nasty mudslinging.

possibly the laziest piece I have ever read – you are making outlandish claims on someone being racist based on just the music they listen to – ridiculous .. race/music don’t mix – ok, maybe she should have done some research – but she’s not writing about Fleetwood Mac she’s writing about Chris Brown for fuck sake – you’re lazy man and you are part of the problem are you even black or part of an ethnic minority. I’ll tell you now as a black man people like you make it more difficult for us to deal with the actual racists out there because you call racism on the most ridiculous assumptions – if you like chris brown just say it and stop chatting shit. By the way if you’d spent more time stalking her facebook page – you’d find out she is a fan of the immigration resource centre that supports immigrants into Australia – grow up whoever you are

Its quite clear she is racist. I can’t see any other coherent reason for her selective view of abuse. I also find it interesting that people are saying that this Chloe Papas, who knows Chris Brown’s back story and is presumably a music fan, doesn’t know the history of her favorite bands. She is either too incompetent a music journalist to know about the music closest to her, which means she shouldn’t be writing at all or she believes in the inherent superiority of the white race and its culture.

For instance, who doesn’t know Lennon smacked around Cynthia? Also I see she’s a fan of the Velvet Underground. As a music journalist and fan she must know Nico confessed to “not getting black people” and glassed a black woman in the face who had the temerity to talk at the table she was sitting at. Now, I don’t care personally what musicians get up to, I just listen to the songs but once you get into taking moral positions you better make sure you have all your bases covered.

The advocates of rockism’s (as Papas clearly is) secret dream is a Golden Dawn of bleached culture free of all black traces, in short a musical genocide and Chloe is just one small part of this virulent wave.

Chloe Papas scares me. She should scare us all.

Maybe her having heard about Chris Brown punching Rihanna is because it was a pretty big news story only a few years back.

Until I’d read this article I’d never heard about John Lennon hitting Cynthia. This is not because I’m a racist.

Maybe she just doesn’t like r’n’b? This is a foolish post. The top comment sums it up perfectly. What it doesn’t say is what an empty attack this is. Why not open your life up to me – I’ll happily go through it with a fine tooth comb and we’ll see what bitter and pointless ramblings I can make from it.

Perhaps I’ll call you a racist because you’ve never seen a Bollywood film or perhaps you’ve had the utter cheek to have never dated a member of a different ethnicity to your own. Maybe I can call you a hypocrite for condemning murder but then having the audacity to watch films or documentaries about actual murders that happened or maybe you’re outrageous hypocrisy runs to the levels of being an environmentalist but driving a car.

To dish out inflammatory, ill-researched and judgemental declarations like “Chloe Papas is a racist and a hypocrite” is moronic. Maye she is, probably she isn’t. But you can’t know because of the crap you’ve trawled through on the internet. What a load of spiteful sh*t this post is.

  9. July 31, 2012 at 8:46 pm | #12

Commenters on this post, here are some cheat notes for understanding what’s going on.

    - She is not racist for not liking black music.
    - She is racist for applying a double standard.

      July 31, 2012 at 10:33 pm | #13

People should point out to her that to encourage a boycott of someone’s music based on domestic violence she is a hypocrite because she listens to some music made by people who’ve done what Chris Brown did.

Then see what she says. Because it does appear to be a double standard, but I’d hazard a guess that she didn’t know about the other stuff mentioned in this article.

She is supposedly a music journalist. As such, one would assume she knows most things about her favorite bands. So she’s either a shitty journalists oooor a bitch with a double standard. Either way, she sucks as a person

The closest thing that I can find to racism in this entire saga is the fact that SO many people have labelled this white woman a racist with absolutely nothing to back it up. Isn’t this accusation, in itself, hideously racist? The woman doesn’t like a wife-beating black man so she must hate ALL black people? Why? Oh because she’s white – and white people are highly likely to be ignorant racists right? Can you not see the irony and hypocrisy in your accusations? Really?

Oh and you’ll notice that I said there was nothing to back this accusation up. That is because your ‘evidence’ is pathetic. I didn’t know that Lindsey Buckingham was a woman beater either. Possibly because the tabloids stopped writing about him 2 decades ago. I think the Rihanna story might have had a little more coverage in recent years. I’m sure that in light of this information, Chloe will feel very differently about him indeed.

Chris Brown is a self-confessed wife beater. His self-confession allows us to make judgements on his morality. Chloe Papas has been proven of nothing. Any decent and fair human being would give her the benefit of the doubt. If you can be so gracious towards Chris Brown, then why not Chloe Papas? She has white skin, but you’re not racist so that wouldn’t make a difference right?

Yeah it’s a pretty broad and unfair assumption to make that she’s racist. If anything she’s an accidentally ignorant hypocrite for encouraging the boycott of Chris Brown’s album, something which i support, due to Mr. Brown’s appearance of lack of repentence for his appaling crime.

The base for your accusation is fundamentally flawed, in that you totally disregard the mores of the time period’s in which the artists were released. Generally speaking (to save time) this new millenium has given women the strongest voice and an unprecendented equality, which is generally accepted as a great and good thing. So logically, if women are now thought better of than they ever were in the past, the male artists in the past who punched women would not be treated with the same stigma that they would so rightly deserve, more over their deeds would be forgotten, as they have been by and large.

This whole accusatory article isn’t worth the broadband it’s being relayed on, the worst thing about it is it wastes time with its unsubstantiated and stupidly self righteous nature.

What a ridiculous article this is.
Perhaps she didn’t know that there were wife-beaters among her favourite musical performers.
And the fact that all the musical performers she lists as liking are white does not make her a racist.

Still many people in the comment section claiming she wouldn’t know John Lennon used violence against women. Then some claiming that she wouldn’t know her favorite band had a woman-beating member. So you’re basically saying she’s a crap journalist. I’m not a journalist and I know these things. So no, I don’t think she is ignorant of the fact, I believe she knows and she doesn’t care because her heroes are white and carry guitars.

Will the realisation that these things took place change her view of these artists? The next time she reviews a reissue will she write the same thing she did about Chris Brown? I doubt it very much.

We know what Papas’ agenda is.

  22. August 1, 2012 at 11:26 am | #28

Papas + Petridis = proof that Greeks are terrible human beings who shouldn’t be allowed to write about music?

The funny thing is Chloe wrote her opinion as a paid music reviewer. She hated it and that was her job to tell what she thinks. All of you posting here are no one with no soap box of your own (yes me included). Calling her racist is funny.

I’m black and my favorite bands/Musicians are Beatles and Paul Simon. If I articulate why I prefer them as opposed to Jay-Z does that make me a racist or a blood traitor?

I see the hypocritical correlation of her trashing on Brown and not on James Brown or Fleetwood Mac. And it is a very good point that Chloe would have to defend.

She is a wannabe music critic…if you hold such moral values as to go after domestic abusers and those with similar crimes, you’re in the wrong industry. Something about people able to ignore Polanski’s rape of 13yr old but want to beat us over the head with CB’s crime @19yrs old….given the number of collabs he’s involved in, many of his contemporaries believe in him. Even Linda McCartney seems to have been beaten a few times by Sir Paul but he ain’t Breezy!! Ozzy_Os is a god!!!

  27. August 2, 2012 at 10:14 am | #35

Spot on fella. All the opprobrium over Chris Brown is laughable given that Lennon, Mark E Smith and James Brown have been canonised by the music press. I don’t think it’s racist as much as its willful myopism. Woody Allen, Polanski – if you’re going to give some of them a pass, you can’t get on your high horse about someone else just because he’s got a higher media profile. Lazy fucking Twitter music criticism, like 90 per cent of it.

It’s probably a shite album, like.

I’ve met Chloe before and can say that she is definitely not racist. Although her review wasn’t quite tasteful, it was her opinion and she can freely express it. You, too, have every right to express your opinion but you may want to find sufficient proof before claiming that someone is racist as you could ruin her career and reputation by declaring such things.

  31. August 16, 2012 at 10:59 am | #39

Yes, Chloe Papas is a hypocrite. However, your argument has several flaws.
To begin with, I don’t think people are attempting to raise Chloe Papas to the level of “Freedom of the City” hero – she wrote an amusingly scathing review which is doing the rounds on the internet; she herself is so unimportant that a lot of people didn’t even bother to give her credit, but this Chris person instead. Her status has nothing to do with the validity of the review.
I would agree with you that she is a hypocrite or, at least, a bit of a dunce – perhaps she just hasn’t done any research on her spouse-slapping idols, and is ignorant of her sins against consistency.
However, if your argument is, because we like the music of some wife-beaters, disliking the music of another wife-beater is hypocrisy, then…your mind is slightly frayed.
Key issue here is misogyny – Chris Brown’s lyrics are misogynistic, and actions speak louder than words, and thus we can confirm his obvious contempt for women from both his actions and his words. Plus, his music is absolutely hideous to listen to – the same as most garbage R’n’B which is foisted upon a reticent public.
I, personally, hate Fleetwood Mac, but I’m afraid it has nothing to do with the domestic habits of any of its members, but rather the horror of their sloppy mewling.
Finally, racism – white people aren’t compelled to like at least one band or black artist to confirm their politically correct views on race.
Incidentally, as some of my favourite singers and artists of all time are black – Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, even Tina Turner – I feel absolutely justified in saying that Chris Brown is a disgrace to his profession.
And he certainly isn’t doing anything for the collective reputation of wife beaters, at any rate.
