It’s my birthday this weekend, so don’t go expecting anything in the way of groundbreaking, or possibly even existing, posts. But to take us into my 26th year, here’s Chris Crocker’s gayer brother shouting out horrorcore mainstay Tech N9ne, before talking about the more urgent matter of her new cellphone. Highpoint for me is when she goes “Tech nininininininininininine”, and sounds a little bit like someone doing a racist Indian voice.

It’s Pen and Pixel Wednesday On Ich Luge Bullets

Before we say anything more, the crux of this post in one line: you really need to get the fuck over to ffm713‘s blog at some hosting service I’ve never heard of because he has the reason the internet may have been invented: a (near) complete archive of every Pen & Pixel-designed album cover. 364 of them to be precise, 364 examples of dogs smoking blunts, ghostly hands waving stacked bundles about, diamond encrusted hub caps on a limo ridden by the devil, dogs smoking blunts while waving cough medicine about and pretty much 364 examples of poor depth perception on the part of the designers. It doesn’t really matter. Pen and Pixel, to me, ARE hip-hop, the point where self-awareness meets don’t-give-a-fuck and the end result is simultaneously abjectly ridiculous and deeply honest. If you need more evidence that you gotta go to ffm713′s instantly, there’s examples of some of my favourites after the cut. And examples presented without commentary as well, because while this may be the high point of the internet, the low point is those fucking websites that show exactly the same 20 “worst album covers ever” over and over again, but try and add their own “witty take” on them. And I don’t think there’s any commentary needed when it comes to Magnolia Short’s “Monkey On Tha Dick”.

When they finally get around to writing “The Complete Guide To The Musical 00s”, they probably won’t dedicate a whole chapter to antifolk. Which, on one hand is a shame, as when I was 19/20 it was easily my favourite genre going (I mourned Italy’s exit from the 2002 World Cup by going to a Joie Dead Blonde Girlfriend gig, the first MP3 I ever downloaded on a broadband connection I paid for was by Prewar Yardsale). On the other hand, however, it’s not a shame because the music from this genre was, with hindsight, all absolutely appalling.

There’s an argument to be made that the reason British music criticism is in such a fucking hole at the moment is because we never had any heroes to look up to when we were at that suggestible age. It’s not as if, say, Daniel Booth’s Melody Maker opinion pieces in the late 90s were sufficient enough to inspire my generation to rise up with pen and follow in his footstep, or as if there’s 3,000 female bloggers out there who duct-tape a set square to their chin before they go to sleep each night, hoping they’ll wake up looking more like Kitty Empire.

Yeah, I’m massively disappointed there isn’t a larger photo of him on the internet as well, as I was going to head off to BlockPosters.com, blow the picture up to two metres by four, and decorate my living room wall with it. A damn shame.

The Wikipedia entry for “music video“, which I’d idly googled in order to come up with some “historical interest” bumf, and apparently The Jacksons’ “Can You Feel It” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” are singles from the mid-1980s. So thanks for that Wikipedia.

It ain’t a hit until Nate Dogg spits

If you’ve looked at any rap blogs in the past week you’ll be on this already, but for my indie brethren and those of you waving your tardy slips about, DJ Steve1der’s “Nate In 08 – The Best of Nate Dogg” mix is probably the single best thing I’ve heard this year, and not just because it offers you the opportunity to use “hold up…… heyyyyyyyyyy” as a default response when anyone asks anything of you at work again. ND is pretty ill right now, because apparently smoking a lot of weed and being morbidly obese is bad for you. Who’d have guessed. Anyway, there are few artistes I could sit through hours of material by and Nate’s one of them. DL this now. YSI link and tracklisting after the cut.
