It’s become a maligned genre. And fairly so. The novelty cover version has, in recent years, been made to look ridiculous by Jo Whiley. Whereas once upon a time the concept of band x, from genre y, covering a song by band z, from genre a, would have resulted in a chuckles and wry appreciation all round, nowadays this is apparently elevated to the level of exalted artform by Ms Whiley and her Live Lounge, wherein we’re meant to be actively excited that, I don’t fucking know, Reverend and the Makers are doing their interpretation of “Love In This Club”, or Gym Class Heroes’ take on “Irish Blood English Heart”. It’s not going down like that.
No, instead, we here at ILB have decided to run with Novelty Cover Version week. A tribute, a shout out, an attempt at reappraising the bands who made it their lives’ mission to reinterpret with more of an eye on chuckles than rocking the dancefloor. We’d like you to keep one eyebrow raised at all time during the course of the next seven days. (more…)
Having never been a 13-year-old girl with ready access Adobe Premiere, I can’t say I fully parse the mindset behind creating a “tribute video”. (more…)
No, I’m not quite sure what “hop-hop” is either. I’m also not quite sure as to why Nemi and friend are sitting in front of an advert for Darkie toothpaste: (more…)
Internet message boards are solely for bored office workers. People who had a #2 single just four months ago really shouldn’t be touching them. They should especially stay clear if, despite ostensibly being male, they started bleeding heavily from the crotch the moment they sent fingers to keyboard.
Although you’d be hard-pressed to realise it while looking at my last.fm statistics, apparently there was some music released this year that wasn’t recorded by Los Campesinos or Royce Da 5′9″. Crazy, I know. Anyway, we here at ILB are proud to present the first in an occasional series looking at those albums we didn’t cover the first time round, either due to lack of ability for anything to say about it, 18-hour-day subbing shifts at the office, or the sole fact that I have single-handedly alienated every single commissioning editor in the UK and as such have no real outlet outside of a fucking WordPress blog. Enjoy.
I think this album is some sort of conceptual in-joke? (more…)
ILB has always been one to shout out exciting new talent, be it toilet circuit-touring indie act, eight-bars-on-a-100-CD-run mixtape rapper, or Wigan Athletic striker Amr Zaki. So let us give some credit to certainly my favourite 20-year-old in the world right now, Joe Mofrad. (more…)
Disappear Here… is a new magazine about pop culture. It is about music, fashion, film, literature, and all that falls in between. It is about the best, newest and most exciting bits of everything. And it looks beautiful. It is not like any other magazine.

Word to spEak You’re bRanes, sometimes we like to idly potter about the BBC’s “Have Your Say” section, and get informed about political correctness gone made, your tax money funding day trips for Jihadists, and people finishing off their messages by telling us to vote for the BNP. However, sometimes there are other topics up for discussion, and for some reason today they’ve decided to open it up for chatter about Alicia and Jackie’s Bond theme. Here, presented without comment, are some of the finest responses: (more…)
